Technically not a trail, this event has been held every winter for years on Lake Georgetown. There is a large community of 4x4 owners who use their vehicles just for racing on ice. The vehicles are low to the ground, with small wheels and tires, big engines, custom paint jobs and funny names. They have studs (small metal pieces) or spikes sticking out of the tires for serious gripping, and the vehicles are most often older Jeeps. The races are usually very loud and very fast.
The exception to this rule is the Street Stock Bare Rubber class. To enter this race you need to have street-legal tires and 4-wheel-drive. This means that our club members only qualify for this division. This race is usually pretty slow and often very funny as the 4x4 vehicles slide all over the frozen lake. The winner is very often the one who doesn't hit any cones.
Each race includes two vehicles in all divisions. You race against your opponent on opposite sides of the track so you won't hit each other. The first one to make it around the track once without hitting a cone wins, while the other is eliminated. This means there is a winner from each day's races from the start of January ready to participate in the championships at the end of February.
This is a great spectator sport as you don't need 4-wheel-drive to go out to watch the races. It's right next to the highway so it's easy to find. Racing is easy and inexpensive, too. In 2004 there was a Subaru sport coupe racing, as well as a new Grand Cherokee and a lot of Jeep Wranglers, CJ-7's and CJ-5's.
